mmを下回った微細プラスチック片は「マイクロプラスチック」と呼ばれ、表面に有害物質を吸着する性質がありますが、それが誤食によって海洋生物に取り込まれてしまうなど、海洋生態系への悪影響が危惧されています。これまでの研究によって、世界各地の沿岸域や日本海などの縁辺海、さらには太平洋や大西洋、あるいは北極海での浮遊が確認されています。このたび、環境省環境研究総合推進費(4-1502)の助成を受けて、マイクロプラスチックによる海洋汚染を調査している九州大学と東京海洋大学の共同研究チームが、東京海洋大学の海鷹丸で南極海の調査を行った結果、南極海に設定した全5測点から計44粒のプラスチック粒子が発見され、うち38粒は南極大陸に最も近い2測点で見つかりました。採集数と採集に用いた網を通過した海水量、そして船上観測した風速や波高をもとに推定した、マイクロプラスチックの浮遊密度(深さ方向の鉛直積分値)は、最も多い測点で28万6千粒/km2となりました。これは北太平洋での平均的な浮遊密度と同じ水準です。この研究成果は \"Microplastics in the Southern Ocean\"としてMarine Pollution
