It is difficult to deal with the problems caused by the development and spread of science and technology without acquiring not only high degree of expertise but also interdisciplinary perspective taking things from various angles. The aim of this paper is to answer the question how students can be encouraged to acquire interdisciplinary research capabilities and what its significance is. An attempt of the reading seminar I am in charge of for the 3rd year students of the Department of the Marine Policy and Culture is to peruse the books of ethics and sociology and to cultivate the interdisciplinary perspective by comparing among them. This example shows abstract is necessary to relate the discussions between different disciplines. Abstract theory makes it possible to capture individual observations in a common framework. However, observations cannot be carried out satisfactorily unless the observer using the theory has his/her own consistency.
