In contrast with Der Mann ohne Eigenschaften of Robert Musil, L’Eclaircie is a fantastic and paradisiacal space of love between brother and sister. The narrator of this novel has a sister named Anne who is older than him by six years. She is dead at the beginning of this novel but in recalling her Spanish black eyes, the narrator admits having had an incestuous desire for Anne. Soon after her death, he encounters Lucie. What is common to Anne and Lucie is their Spanish black eyes , and through them, he fi nds Anne in Lucie and loves Lucie like his sister. Next the narrator recognizes the same Spanish black eyes in the portrait of Berthe Morisot painted by Manet and he conjectures that their relation is almost incestuous. He also recognizes the same Spanish black color in Picasso’s two sisters, Lola and Conchita. Between him and his sisters there might be an incestuous relation and according to the narrator, Picasso loved Eva and Jacqueline in the manner of loving his sisters. The sunny spell, which is English equivalent for L’Eclaircie, a title of this novel, is brought by black light and represents the space of the incestuous love between brother and sister, which should not be condemned as in the case of OEdipus but rather should be blessed as “ le vert paradis des amours enfantines
